Who Won the Weekend’s Battle of the Remakes?

The Karate Kid Wins the Box Office

It was the battle of the remakes this past weekend, with The A-Team and The Karate Kid facing off to see who would overtake Shrek Forever After at the box office. Who came out on top? That would be The Karate Kid, which earned $56 million. The A-Team earned substantially less, only pulling in $26 million, while Shrek Forever After hung onto spot number three with $15.8 million and a total gross of $210 million. Spot number four went to Get Him to the Greek (weekend gross $10 million, total gross $36.5 million), and Killers made it to spot number five, with a weekend gross of $8.1 million and a total gross of $30.6 million.

Other new releases were the documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work ($171,500), the Sundance winner Winter’s Bone ($85,442), Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky ($48,892) and The Lottery ($17,200).

Next weekend will be dominated by Pixar, with Toy Story 3 being released. Another hit from Pixar? Someone needs to tell them they can take it easy for a bit after the success of Up. Jonah Hex is also coming out, as well as The Killer Inside Me and 8: The Mormon Proposition in limited release.
