New Moon Gets Blind Sided

After two consecutive weeks in the number two spot, The Blind Side shockingly outperformed New Moon, capturing the top spot at this weekend’s box office. The biopic of NFL player Michael Oher continues to garner a positive audience response and brought in $20.4 million over the weekend. Although the second installment in the Twilight Saga fell from the number one spot, the vampire tale grossed $15.7 this weekend, which brings the domestic total gross to $255.6 million and more than $570 million internationally.

Jim Sheridan’s Brothers, starring Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire, opened in the number three spot  with a weekend gross of $9.7 million. It was the only new movie to break the top five, with Sony Pictures’ Armored opening at the number seven spot and Miramax’s Everybody’s Fine in the number 10 spot. Paramount Pictures’ Up in the Air opened in 15th place, but brought in an impressive $1.18 million in only 15 theaters.

Next week, Warner Bros. hopes to repeat the success of the The Blind Side with another sports release, Invictus, and Buena Vista releases The Princess and the Frog in wide release.
