AARP Names the Best Movies for Grown-Ups

Movie studios may tend to gear most of their films toward the youth market, but the over-50 crowd takes up a sizable chunk of the moviegoing audience as well. With that in mind, AARP The Magazine recently picked the best movies of the year for the 50+ audience with its annual Movies for Grownups Awards. Clint Eastwood’s inspirational Invictus garnered the top award for overall “Best Movie for Grownups.” Additional honors went to Jeff Bridges for “Best Actor 50+” (Crazy Heart), Helen Mirren for “Best Actress 50+” (The Last Station) and Kathryn Bigelow for “Best Director 50+” (The Hurt Locker). Other, more offbeat categories included “Best Grownup Love Story” (Meryl Streep and Stanly Tucci for Julie & Julia), “Best Buddy Picture” (The Soloist) and “Best Movie for Grownups Who Refuse to Grow Up” (Star Trek).

AARP The Magazine is proud to celebrate movies that engage adult audiences with challenging topics, thoughtful new approaches and sterling work by actors, actresses, directors and writers age 50+, all at the top of their games. Congratulations to all of this years winners,” says Nancy Perry Graham, editor of AARP The Magazine. AARP will also present a Lifetime Achievement Award to Robert De Niro at the L.A. Awards Gala on February 16.
