The Artist Comes Out on Top at the Golden Globes

Best Actor—Comedy or Musical winner Jean Dujardin, The Artist

At last night’s Golden Globes, it was Oscar frontrunner The Artist that came out on top, winning three awards, including Best Picture—Comedy or Musical. Still, it’s probably best to keep the film’s name written in pencil on your Oscar ballot for now; though it was one of only two films to win multiple awards, the winner in the Best Picture—Drama category (this year, The Descendants) historically has a better chance at victory come Oscar night. Additionally, The Artist missed out in both the Best Screenplay and Best Director categories, in which Midnight in Paris and Hugo, respectively, walked away with the gold.

Still, it was good night for Michel Hazanavicius’s paean to silent cinema, particularly for leading man Jean Dujardin, who was named Best Actor—Comedy or Musical. The film awards were, for the most part, spread out among a number of films. Other winners in the acting category were George Clooney for The Descendants (Best Actor—Drama), Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady (Best Actress—Drama), Michelle Williams for My Week with Marilyn (Best Actress—Comedy or Musical), Christopher Plummer for Beginners (Best Supporting Actor) and Octavia Spencer for The Help (Best Supporting Actress).
