Allen Daviau Joins Art Center College of Design
Esteemed cinematographer Allen Daviau, ASC will join the part-time faculty at Art Center College of Design. Daviau, whose credits include classic films such as E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, The Color Purple, Bugsy, as well as recent hits like Van Helsing, will teach a master class in cinematography.
The five-time Academy Award nominee is also a recipient of a BAFTA award as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Cinematographers.
“Having an artist of Allen’s caliber teach a master cinematography class is emblematic of what makes the Art Center Film program so unique,” says Ross LaManna, chair of undergraduate film at Art Center College. “We believe visual storytelling skills are taught best by those doing the best work themselves.”
Located in Pasadena, Art Center College of Design attracts numerous students for both undergraduate and graduate programs. It was the first design school to receive the United Nations’ Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status.

I’m very impressed by Allen Daviau’s commitment to his art and I admire how he worked his way up the Hollywood food chain by providing lighting for high school stage plays, working the graveyard shift in photo labs and shooting a live television show for $100 per week. I’m currently takin a master of science in nursing and I’m on my way to becoming a nurse, but I would have loved to become a director, and work in the film industry. I’m happy for all the students at the Art Center College of Design who will be learning from such an impressive personality like Allen Daviau.

A big part of the mainstream public doesn’t really understand or acknowledge the work done by cinematographers or the art direction department. Sometimes cinematography turns the movie into a masterpiece. When I got my masters degree in criminal justice I met a film maker who wanted to study criminal law to do research for his movies and he told me how movies would be much less without the people involved in cinematography. I think there should be a lot more appreciation and attention to these people who only stay in the shadow of the actors or directors.

Recently finished one of those online masters of public health and now I am thinking about pursuing my dream: to be a designer. Since I was little I have always wanted to be a designer but let’s be honest it is not really a job that brings money. Now that I have a well paid job I can follow my hobbies!

The Art Center College of Design is very fortunate to have someone of Allen Davieu’s caliber as a professor. While getting my online Christian degrees I didn’t have the opportunity to even meet any of my teachers but I imagine that learning is a totally different experience when having such inspirational and charismatic people to teach you.
