Keanu Reeves is The One at the Box Office

A couple weeks after a massive Thanksgiving weekend, the box office continues to lumber along. The big “winner” this weekend was The Day the Earth Stood Still, starring Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates, Jaden Smith and John Cleese, pulling in a somewhat paltry (for an event movie like this) $31 million in its first week. Four Christmases finished the weekend in second with $13.3 million, pushing its total gross up to $88 million and handily beating the new Christmas movie Nothing Like the Holidays. Holidays, the festive ensemble movie starring Alfred Molina, Freddy Rodríguez, Luis Guzmán, Debra Messing, Jay Hernandez and John Leguizamo, took in a mere $3.5 million on over 1,600 screens and was the only new movie to crack the top 10.
Rounding out the top five were Twilight, taking in $8.01 million to push it over $150 million in its fourth week, Disney’s Bolt, with $7.51 million and Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar host-starring (Hugh Jackman) Australia with $4.29 million.
Expect next week’s top 10 to look drastically different with the entrances of three box office behemoths: Will Smith (in Seven Pounds with Rosario Dawson and Woody Harrelson), Jim Carrey (in Yes Man with Zooey Deschanel) and an animated animal (in The Tale of Despereaux featuring the voices of Matthew Broderick, Emma Watson and Dustin Hoffman). Check back next week as the Top of the Box Office report to see how everything played out.

The Day The Earth Stood Still is a great movie, I can’t say i’ve seen “Four Christamses” on any tv listings this year!
