Hellboy's Golden Weekend

Moviegoers were swept away this weekend by the visually stunning underground world depicted in Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army, which stole the number one spot at the box office, taking in an approximate $35.9 million.

Will Smith’s Hancock fell short after its heroic debut, taking in $33 million this weekend and reaching a total gross just over $165 million thus far. The remake of the 1959 film of the same name, Journey to the Center of the Earth, now starring Brendan Fraser in 3D, took the number three spot, reaching a gross of nearly $20.6 million.

Meanwhile, older releases WALL-E and Wanted took the number four and five spots, respectively. The still-lovable robot flick earned just over $18.5 million, while the Angelina Jolie thriller took in about $11.6 million.

The summer blockbuster fight continues next weekend with the release of one of the most anticipated movies of 2008: The Dark Knight. The popular ABBA musical-turned-film Mamma Mia! starring Meryl Streep joins the box office battle next weekend as well. Will the summer box office reach its peak after these two movies hit theaters? Find out on next Monday’s Top of the Box Office report.

Hellboy has a very interesting character. I love the irony of his being and the way he is represented. Kind of like a gentle bear that is not so gentle!
