Gotham Independent Film Awards Series Comes to NYC

IFP, the nation’s oldest and largest organization of independent moviemakers, presents the Gotham Independent Film Award Series. The three-week program of screenings and panel discussions will highlight the work of nominees and honorees from the 18th Annual Gotham Independent Awards, which take place on December 2.

The series will give New Yorkers the opportunity to meet with moviemakers such as Gus Van Sant (Milk) and Rosemarie DeWitt (Rachel Getting Married), as well as a chance to see the nominees for “Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You, “ the Gotham Award for the best American independent movies yet to be picked up for theatrical distribution.

Other events include: MoMA’s Modern Mondays, The Breakthrough Director’s Panel, Volver screening, The Breakthrough Actor’s panel, Melvin Van Peebles screenings, special screening of Gus Van Sant’s Milk and a Q&A with the director and a conversation with HBO Documentary Films president Sheila Nevins.

The series, which IFP executive director Michelle Byrd says, “gives New Yorkers a chance to see up close some of the most talked about and acclaimed independent film talent of the year,” will take place from November 20 to December 6. For more information visit www.ifp.org.

I’m stuck in the Midwest with our smaller film festivals. I’ll have to take a trip to NY City sometime to visit a large one.

The Gotham Independent Film Awards, selected by distinguished juries and presented in New York City, the home of independent film, are the first honors of the film awards season. This public showcase honors the film making community, expands the audience for independent films, and supports the work that IFP does behind the scenes throughout the year to bring such films to fruition.

For some reason people tend to look pass independent films and opt for the big budget ones. Personally, I prefer independent films, it’s much deeper and holds more meaning than the big budget ones. A favorite of mine is Rushmore an I recommend that everyone should watch it. Jason Schwartzman is amazing in this one.

I’d much rather watch indy films than main stream big budget films. Interesting enough I am seeing a lot more use of social media for these types of films.
