National Board of Review Awards Previews the 2009 Oscars
If the National Board of Review awards are a hint of what’s to be expected at this year’s Academy Awards, then we’re all in for one hell of an Oscar night. Independent movies upset the studio features, with late entrant Slumdog Millionaire leading the pack as Best Film, relegating popular favorites like The Dark Knight and WALL-E to be among the Top Ten.

“At the Movies” co-hosts Ben Lyons and Ben Mankiewicz announced the 14th annual Broadcast Film Critics Association’s Critics Choice Awards in Gotham’s Time Square. The proceedings were aired live on VH1, which will broadcast the ceremony January 8th from the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.
Milk and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button received the most critical love, tied with eight nominations apiece.

Canadian Film Centre and National Film Board Announce Joint Program
The Canadian Film Centre (CFC) and National Film Board (NFB) have recently announced the confirmation of four Canadian directors who will participate in the inaugural CFC/NFB Feature Documentary Program. The program was designed to allow accomplished Canadian directors develop cinematic documentaries. Among this year's chosen honorees are Yung Chang, Sarah Polley, Shelley Saywell and John Walker. The six-month program not only provides the directors a residency with the CFC but also a project-specific mentorship with the biggest talents in the documentary world.

Film Independent Announces the 2009 Spirit Award Nominees
Ballast, Frozen River and Rachel Getting Married lead the pack
Awards season has officially begun, with studios heavily campaigning for end-of-year success stories and the first of the year's award nominations announced. The 24th annual Spirit Awards will take place on February 21, 2009 and honor, among others, Charlie Kaufman's Syndecdoche, New York, which is receiving the Robert Altman Award. Nominated movies include Lance Hammer’s Ballast, Courtney Hunt’s Frozen River, Jonathan Demme’s Rachel Getting Married, Kelly Reichardt’s Wendy and Lucy and Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler.

Cadillac Records Premiere to Benefit Phoenix House
Every now and then the glitz and glamour of the red carpet gets to be something more than just a flashy excuse for a new outfit or a ride in a limo, allowing the superficial side of moviemaking (pose for the camera!) to become something of substance, something more akin to the reason why a movie is made. With the New York and Los Angeles premieres of Cadillac Records, a period piece centered upon Leonard Chess (played by Adrien Brody) and the lives of the blues and soul artists who were part of his Chess Records label, the red carpet gets to do just that.

Gotham Independent Film Awards Series Comes to NYC
IFP, the nation's oldest and largest organization of independent moviemakers, presents the Gotham Independent Film Award Series. The three-week program of screenings and panel discussions will highlight the work of nominees and honorees from the 18th Annual Gotham Independent Awards, which take place on December 2.

Beginning November 10, director Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III and IV) and the star-writer-composer (Terrance Zdunich) of the much-anticipated gothic rock musical Repo! The Genetic Opera kicked off an exclusive road tour, traveling the country for seven days for one-night-only screenings in seven cities (including Portland, Seattle, Chicago, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Orlando). Each screening is followed by a Q&A with the moviemakers. Other cast members, including Paul Sorvino, Alexa Vega (Spy Kids), Anthony Head (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects) and Paris Hilton, may appear as surprise guests.

Details Magazine and Nehst Will Make Your Movie
While Details Magazine has always been more concerned with the finest in men’s style and fashion, their recently announced partnership with NEHST studios has them trading in what it takes to dress like a movie star with actually making movie stars. The partnership is calling upon Details readers to submit movie concepts with the ultimate opportunity of being made into a feature-length movie. The project, whose submission deadline is May 1, 2009, will allow all creative individuals to catch their big break and cut to the front of the moviemaking line with a geenlit movie. The chosen idea, which should be an innovative and developed concept of cultural relevance in addition to being related to the Details reader, will have undergone a vigorous evaluation process with production and filming commencing shortly thereafter.

Four lucky students and graduates, however, have been given the chance of a lifetime and a leg up in their careers thanks to Cinereach, a nonprofit media organization created by moviemakers and philanthropists two years ago with the goal of aiding movies of social relevance. With the 2009 Reach Film Fellowship Program, the organization is awarding a $5,000 grant to each newly appointed Fellow and pairing them with mentors and advisors who are renowned in their various moviemaking fields.

IFP, the nation's oldest and largest organization of independent moviemakers, has announced the nominees for the 18th annual Gotham Independent Film Awards (formerly known as the Gotham Awards).
The awards are the first major honors of the film awards season and usually a sign of success to come. Past winners, such as Juno (2007), Half Nelson (2006) and Junebug (2005), have gone on to receive additional awards and Oscar nominations, which bodes well for this year’s 22 nominated films, including Jonathan Demme's Rachel Getting Married and Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona (both of which received a total of two nominations in the same categories: Best Ensemble Performance and Breakthrough Actor).

Fetid Festivities for World Zombie Day
The dress code this weekend is tattered clothing and rotting flesh—that is, if you plan on joining the World Zombie Day celebration in Philadelphia and New York City.
The festivities will take place on October 25 in Philadelphia and continue on October 26 in New York. Both ghoulish gatherings will feature the Living Dead Girlz zombie dance troupe (featuring Shannon Lark, Fangoria's 2009 Official Spooksmodel), live bands, flesh hook body suspensions, sideshow acts and America’s Most Dangerous Game Show. Civilians can be zombie-fied for free at the first stop of each event.

Marvel Calls Raleigh Studios Home
Comic book fans can rest easy. The successful wave of graphic novel-inspired films has no end in sight. Marvel Studios, a subsidiary of Marvel Entertainment, Inc., recently signed a long-term lease agreement with Raleigh Studios in Manhattan Beach, California.
Marvel plans to move their corporate offices to the Raleigh lot as well, which consists of 14 sound stages on 22 acres with an additional 300,000 square feet of office and support space. Along with its sister company, Hollywood Rentals, they are now North America’s largest operator of independent film studio facilities and production services.

Penélope Cruz To Receive Tribute at Gotham Awards
Penélope Cruz is a hot topic on the cinema radar. Not only was she recently seen starring in two critically-acclaimed movies, Isabel Coixet's Elegy and Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but it was also recently announced that she will be honored with a tribute award at IFP’s 18th annual Gotham Awards ceremony in December. IFP is the nation’s oldest and largest nonprofit organization of independent moviemakers and presents the Gotham Awards each year to kick off the awards season. The jury decided to award Cruz with a tribute due to her achievements stateside and abroad, for she has earned great success from her starring roles within Spanish cinema as well as Hollywood and was the first Spaniard to be nominated for an Oscar.

According to SNL Kagan’s recent study, "Economics of Motion Pictures," box office numbers reached an all-time high in 2007, making a record $9.67 billion despite the economic downturn. The previous record was set in 2002 at $9.29 billion.
The study, which included all films shown on 1,000 or more screens from 2003 to 2007, found that the most expensive films posted the largest revenues and average net profit. Statistics were broken down by budget range and genre, encompassing animated, sci-fi/fantasy, family, action, drama, comedy, romance, horror and thriller films.

Deepa Mehta Receives the Infinite Power of Story Award
Deepa Mehta, the Indian-born, Canadian-based director of 2005’s Water (Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award nominee) was will be awarded the Infinite Power of Story Lifetime Achievement Award by Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and Television (SFTV). The award will be given to Mehta at the school’s annual Film Outside the Frame Festival on October 13 at the Directors Guild of America.

Religulous Disbelief
Jetset Studios, one of the entertainment industry’s leading online marketing agencies, has decided to face controversy head-on by developing Disbeliefnet.com, a new Website that promotes the release of the upcoming Bill Maher documentary Religulous. The site, which satirizes the spiritual site Belief.com, has already been categorized as “tasteless” and deemed “unsuitable for use on a government network” by the United States Department of Defense.

Sony Partners with The Film Foundation for Truly Classic Movies
Lovers of classic films can breathe a sigh of sweet relief as it has been announced that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) and Martin Scorsese’s non-profit film preservation organization, The Film Foundation, have teamed up to release onto DVD beloved titles from the Sony catalog that have been out of circulation for years. The two organizations plan to release the DVDs under the “Collector’s Choice” banner with each movie being restored and remastered.

Shakespeare on Film: The IndiePix Collection
Anthony Hopkins, lest ye be a fool, take note: If you want to fully fit your upcoming role as King Lear, it may be wise to check out the IndiePix Shakespeare collection. The 10 films within the collection, which range from Laurence Olivier’s classic interpretations of Henry V (1944), Hamlet (1948), and Richard III (1955) to Bollywood’s own Maqbool and Omkara (renditions of Macbeth and Othello respectively), shed new light on Shakespeare’s work, bringing him into “a new media” and offering students another way of examining his themes amongst a global background.
