Adventures in Self-Releasing: My Week At-A-Glance

Thought I would mix things up a bit again, format-wise. Here’s a quick glimpse at my week last week.

Monday, April 6th
I’m back from the Wisconsin Film Festival. Tickets for the theatrical premiere haven’t been made available for purchase yet. That’s the priority right now. Call R. again. Keep pushing. Make it happen.

Adventures in Self-Releasing: The Less Money Equation

We've been talking in this blog about distribution versus self-distribution. Well, if after reading several of my posts you've decided that self-release equals misery, then what are your other options?

Adventures in Self-Releasing: Is There a Better Way?

Before I forget, we have just launched our trailer for The Last Lullaby. If interested, please take a look here.

Okay now on to my thoughts for this week. Some people have questioned my model. Is it sustainable? Isn’t there a better way? I don’t know. Is there?

Adventures in Self-Releasing: Preparing for Launch

Things are heating up. The adventure is getting… well adventurous. May 1 (our theatrical launch) is creeping up oh so quickly. I keep saying to myself, “There’s 45 days in March, right? So we’re still eight weeks out?”

Time to catch everyone up. How’s it going out there? What are we doing to prepare for that all-important weekend of May 1, May 2 and May 3?

The answer is a lot.

Adventures in Self-Releasing: Learn from My Mistakes, I Have

I thought a good topic today would be a discussion of the various mistakes I made along the way. Or what I will do differently the next time around. I actually feel like I have done pretty damn well, given that really this was the first time I have navigated this crazy world. But, there are a few things I’ve learned that I will take into account, and probably even change, for the next movie.

Adventures in Self-Releasing: The Last Lullaby Gets a Release Date!

Just to shake things up a bit, I thought I would shift today from my standard prose to an interview-style entry. The interviewer has asked that his name remain anonymous. But I can tell you that he’s about 5’7” with dark hair, a buck forty-five on a good day and sports an overgrown goatee.

Adventures in Self-Releasing: Being Better Than 99.9 Percent Just Won't Do

It was a conversation with a producer friend of mine that first set me off on this road of self-releasing. In my eyes, he had hit a home run—premiered at one of the top festivals in North America, landed a deal with one of the top independent distributors and seemed to have the entire industry championing his movie. And then I asked the million-dollar question: 'So friend, if you don’t mind me asking, how much did the distributor pay to acquire your movie?'

Adventures in Self-Releasing: Switching Your Title from “Moviemaker” to “Entrepreneur”

Growing up I definitely never thought of myself as an entrepreneur. Yet, if you’re an independent moviemaker, chances are that at some point (if you haven’t already) you will need to shift from looking at yourself as a pure artist to a businessman of some sort. I’m not talking about becoming some stiff in a suit. I never went to business school and trust me that’s not what I’m advocating at all. (I mean, this is coming from someone who got into movies because of Jean-Luc Godard.)

Adventures in Self-Releasing: Wait, Making the Movie was the Easy Part?

I thought I’d do my best to describe a typical day, what it’s been like so far self-releasing my movie and some of the things you can probably expect if you decide to go down this road.

First off, before saying anything else, know that I have cleared my plate for the next six months to a year. Last year, during the bulk of our festival run, I taught movie courses at the local university. But now this is all I’m doing.

So, how can I afford this?

Adventures In Self-Releasing: Five Important Lessons

I read once that Francis Ford Coppola said, “Every time you make a movie, you’re jumping off a cliff.” That’s definitely been true in my experience. And if you’re jumping off a cliff making a movie, you’re jumping off Mount Everest trying to take it out yourself.

Adventures In Self-Releasing: Starting in Shreveport

I’m a little torn. I really want to start describing the feelings and all that come with the announcement of self-releasing. However, I guess if you’re going to follow along for the next few months, I better first tell you how I plan on doing this whole thing. And how I came up with the particular model I’m using.

Adventures in Self-Releasing: The Last Lullaby

Last Friday, I finally did it. I put together an e-mail for my 48 investors, saying, “As I mentioned in our last couple of updates, I think it will soon be time for us to transition from the world of film festivals to some real distribution for our film. That said, I am pleased to announce I have made some decisions that will push us into the next phase of this process. Beginning in May, we will start a small theatrical release of our film.”
