Adventures in Self-Releasing: Preparing for Launch
Things are heating up. The adventure is getting… well adventurous. May 1 (our theatrical launch) is creeping up oh so quickly. I keep saying to myself, “There’s 45 days in March, right? So we’re still eight weeks out?”
Time to catch everyone up. How’s it going out there? What are we doing to prepare for that all-important weekend of May 1, May 2 and May 3?
The answer is a lot.

I thought a good topic today would be a discussion of the various mistakes I made along the way. Or what I will do differently the next time around. I actually feel like I have done pretty damn well, given that really this was the first time I have navigated this crazy world. But, there are a few things I’ve learned that I will take into account, and probably even change, for the next movie.

Marlett & Me: Film Financing Foray = Fly Fishing Finesse
To raise funds for your film, you must first devoid yourself of the idea that you are seeking financing for a work of art. No. You are seeking money for a business. It is the film business (no matter how much the detractors want to call what you do a "hobby"). And to raise money for a business, you need a plan, a.k.a. a business plan.

Adventures in Self-Releasing: The Last Lullaby Gets a Release Date!
Just to shake things up a bit, I thought I would shift today from my standard prose to an interview-style entry. The interviewer has asked that his name remain anonymous. But I can tell you that he’s about 5’7” with dark hair, a buck forty-five on a good day and sports an overgrown goatee.

Okay, everyone is all aflutter about the economic situation and what its "effects" are on the film biz, especially the indie film biz. Like a damn bunch of swooning Scarletts. What most don’t realize is that they themselves, their very reactions, are a big part of the problem.

Adventures in Self-Releasing: Being Better Than 99.9 Percent Just Won't Do
It was a conversation with a producer friend of mine that first set me off on this road of self-releasing. In my eyes, he had hit a home run—premiered at one of the top festivals in North America, landed a deal with one of the top independent distributors and seemed to have the entire industry championing his movie. And then I asked the million-dollar question: 'So friend, if you don’t mind me asking, how much did the distributor pay to acquire your movie?'

Grassroots Moviemaker: Second Wind for Rufus
The progress goddess pays us a visit
Being a moviemaker isn’t rocket science. When you’re a rocket scientist you have formulas and equations with which to solve your problems; you have colleagues who can show you the exact path toward becoming a successful rocket scientist. And when you get there, you have a salary. I thus contend that making movies is far and away more difficult than a cozy, sterile pursuit like rocket science.

Or… make every mistake in the book and still get distribution!
1. Don’t start shooting until you have SOME money in the bank. But if you do, make sure nobody in your cast or crew seriously expects to be paid. And beg your mom to cater for free.
2. Don’t believe the first investor who swoons over your script and says he wants to fund it. Don’t believe the second investor who swoons over your script…. or the third one who swoons… or the fourth…. or the fifth… But if you do get to the point where you’ve drawn up an actual bona fide contract, don’t spend the money until the said investor has signed the said contract and the said money is in the said bank. And even then, wait 10 days in case the check bounces.
