Marlett & Me: Brother Film Financier, Where Art Thou?

The question I’m posing today is as simple as it is profoundly uncomfortable: Has traditional film financing gone the way of the 35mm SLR film camera? I am neck-deep in raising funds... correction, trying to raise funds (albeit with some success). And call me crazy but the traditional "film finance" models are suddenly seeming quaint and useless. Anyone else feeling the cold chill in the air?

Adventures in Self-Releasing: Switching Your Title from “Moviemaker” to “Entrepreneur”

Growing up I definitely never thought of myself as an entrepreneur. Yet, if you’re an independent moviemaker, chances are that at some point (if you haven’t already) you will need to shift from looking at yourself as a pure artist to a businessman of some sort. I’m not talking about becoming some stiff in a suit. I never went to business school and trust me that’s not what I’m advocating at all. (I mean, this is coming from someone who got into movies because of Jean-Luc Godard.)

Video Views Pick: Changeling

On March 10, 1928, Christine Collins (Angelina Jolie) came home to an empty house. Her nine year-old son Walter was missing. Five months later, Los Angeles Police Captain J.J. Jones (Jeffrey Donovan), with a large crowd that included the press watching, reunited Christine with whom he said was her son. One look told her differently. This kid was not Walter. But the police department, known for its ineptitude and graft during this era, insisted that it was.

Notes from Movieland: From Heaven to Hell in Santa Barbara

Rodrigo Santoro, James Cromwell and a Primer on Eugenics

My trip to the Santa Barbara Film Festival a few weeks ago wasn’t the nirvana I’d expected. Interviewing two enlightened, preternaturally talented, hotter than habaneros actors is hard work! But due to my selfless commitment to serve the interests of you, our MovieMaker readership, I sacrificed two days of my life and cruised up the Pacific Coast Highway to one of the most hospitable cities in California.

Adventures in Self-Releasing: Wait, Making the Movie was the Easy Part?

I thought I’d do my best to describe a typical day, what it’s been like so far self-releasing my movie and some of the things you can probably expect if you decide to go down this road.

First off, before saying anything else, know that I have cleared my plate for the next six months to a year. Last year, during the bulk of our festival run, I taught movie courses at the local university. But now this is all I’m doing.

So, how can I afford this?

Marlett & Me: Kissing Dragons and Fighting Frogs

The more difficulties arise in financing my film, I try to remember to: Fight the dragons, kiss the frogs and be humble and wise enough to know the difference. It’s really helpful to ye ol’ psyche to come here and vent, especially after another week of funding struggles. Damn, is anyone else feeling the heat of the economic meltdown? Whew! But we keep standing up, yes? You are getting back on your feet each time you get whacked down, aren’t you? Hey if I can, so can you.

Grassroots Moviemaker: We Are Here!

Anna’s Journey: Hope Amidst the Hand-wringing

Not many events, not even economic catastrophe, can hold a candle to war as way of putting things in perspective. As I write this, one very determined young actress just emailed me that the plane she’s been riding halfway across the world— from the Republic of Georgia to the island of Manhattan— has just touched down. She is, and I quote, “…excited, confused, and jetlagged, but most of all euphoric. OMG! OMG! I am here!” That is one happy teenager, and she has finally chased her moviemaking dreams all the way to the U.S.A.

Adventures In Self-Releasing: Five Important Lessons

I read once that Francis Ford Coppola said, “Every time you make a movie, you’re jumping off a cliff.” That’s definitely been true in my experience. And if you’re jumping off a cliff making a movie, you’re jumping off Mount Everest trying to take it out yourself.

Marlett & Me: Attack of the Awkward Algebra Analogy

One of the things we learn in seventh grade (besides how to hide that one sock…) is how to move linear algebra formula elements to the other side of the = symbol. The key to doing it most efficiently, if I remember correctly, is to first reduce both sides to their smallest common denominator. Remember? (Did I just make your stomach turn? Algebra! Run away!)
