Up until recently, A.J. Edwards’ main work consisted of serving extensive time as a seasoned second-unit director for legendary director Terrence Malick. Now, Edwards’ own first attempt at directing, The Better Angels, depicts the wilderness of 1817 Indiana as a backdrop for a youthful Abe Lincoln’s upbringing, and premiered at Sundance in January. Edwards’ second-unit experience comes through strong in his directorial debut, produced by Malick, as it is visually stunning with sweeping shots and gorgeous black-and-white cinematography. While second unit is often overlooked in favor of plot action, The Better Angels serves as a tribute to not only the essentiality, but also the graphic charisma second-unit photography supplies.
