Salomon, Academy-Award-nominee for cinematography in The Abyss and visual effects in Backdraft, takes the helm of this mistaken identity thriller that explores the kidnapping of a New York mechanic (McDermott), who is locked inside of a walk-in freezer. Although in some respects a traditional kidnapping flick (mobsters, money, and murder), Freezer has an unusual relation to setting—the story rarely leaves the confines of the titular walk-in freezer. In the following interview, producer David Buelow explains that for this chilly premise to work, they needed a director with creative tact and a distinct visual style, “so that we didn’t feel claustrophobic.” It looks like they found their guy in Mikael Salomon.

Freezer opened in limited theaters on Friday, January 17 2014, and on DVD, Blu-ray and VOD on January 21, 2014. MM
