Equal Writes: Screenwriting challenge announces semi-finalists vying for $2,500

Equal Writes, a screenwriting challenge founded by Duly Noted, Inc. and We Make Movies (and supported in part by MovieMaker) has closed the call for entries seeking, “intelligent, courageous stories forged on the intersections of race, religion and gender with voices that shape the new discussion on diversity.” The 22 semi-finalists have been announced at www.WeMakeMovies.org.

Of the semi-finalists, seven will be selected to stand on stage before a panel of three producers to present their script. The ultimate goal is that the producers will like the pitches enough to make all of the films on offering. But at least one writer will receive a $2,500 option—as well other perks to help get the film off the ground. RED has also joined MovieMaker Magazine (that’s us!) as an official sponsor of the event, which means finalists could potentially have access to SCARLET and EPIC cameras if their script is green-lighted.

Duly Noted, Inc. and We Make Movies have been seeking producer panelists who are hungry to produce new work by unknown writers. Sundance veteran Effie T. Brown (HBO’s Real Women Have Curves, Google/YouTube Channel WIGS) was the first to announce she would sit on the judges panel. This week, Sundance veteran and Producing Fellow Reuben Lim (Lane Street Pictures) joined as well. Lim’s previous films include Saving Lincoln, Half-Life, and Super Capers. The third producer will be announced in the coming weeks.

The seven finalists will be announced June 8, 2013. For more details on the vision behind this challenge, visit: www.EqualWritesFilm.com or send an email to info@equalwritesfilm.com.
